Stay tuned as we continue our candidate forums with a focus on Michigan's first congressional district.
It covers all of the upper peninsula and the northern lower peninsula from Macheno City all the way south to H Hotton Lake and West Branch.
We will look at the contest between the two leading candidates, Democrat Callie Barr and incumbent Republican Jack Bergman.
The Michigan First Congressional District Candidate Forum is next on Media Meet.
(music) (music) Hello everyone, I'm Mike Settles.
Welcome to WNMU's media meet.
Michigan's first congressional district is one of the largest districts east of the minute, 4 secondsMississippi.
There is a great deal of constituent territory to cover for anyone wanting to represent us in Washington.
In the second half of the minute, 13 secondsshow, we will hear from Republican incumbent Jack Bergman.
Uh for the moment, I would like to welcome to WNMU's studios the Democrat trying to uh minute, 22 secondstrying a second time actually to unseat Congressman Bergman, Democrat Callie Barr.
Welcome back to Media Meet.
Thank you so much for having me.
minute, 29 secondsIt is great to have you again.
This is your second attempt uh at Congress.
Uh last time was two years ago.
Uh for those that maybe haven't been following minute, 38 secondsyou or that attempt, tell us more about yourself, your background, and why it is you want to try for a second time to to be our congressional representative.
minute, 45 secondsThank you.
Yes, I'm a I hail from Shboan right there at the tip of the mitt.
I'm deeply rooted in this district.
My family goes back five generations.
minute, 53 secondsMarried my husband out of high school.
minute, 55 secondsuh he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps.
So very proud military family.
So I'm a veteran advocate now, military family advocate.
Um high school minutes, 4 secondsEnglish teacher and then later in life I became an attorney um to help my husband get the benefits that that he needed as a as a service member um and to help other military families like ours.
minutes, 15 secondsWell, as mentioned, this is your second attempt.
Um two years ago, you lost to Jack Bergman by about 21 points.
What minutes, 22 secondsmakes you think it would be any different this time around?
minutes, 25 secondsSo, absolutely.
Um, the need that I saw in 2024, I can tell you, has only become more urgent today.
I hear everywhere I minutes, 34 secondsgo, enough is enough.
And when I say enough is enough, what do I mean?
Um, well, first, Jack Bergman is the number minutes, 42 secondsone abuser of taxpayer dollars when it comes to lodging.
He is the number one spender out of 35 435 members of Congress for lodging all on our dime.
minutes, 56 secondsAnd and this is outrageous.
Even during COVID when some members were getting reimbursed like $600, he spent over $61,000 minutes, 5 secondsof our money.
On top of this, we have corporate donors that have funded things like $10,000 in cigars, $8,500 at an minutes, 13 secondsoyster bar.
And he's doing all of this while our costs continue to rise.
He supports the war in Iran.
We have never minutes, 21 secondsseen diesel this high ever.
Um and you know, my dad smoked a cigar on the day I was born.
Jack Bergman's lighting him up minutes, 29 secondswhile he's closing our hospitals, closing OB units throughout this district.
On top of that, we have corruption.
The Detroit News in the past minutes, 36 seconds18 months reported on corruption within that campaign.
There was an ethics complaint filed by a retired judge, former Republican party chair who said minutes, 44 secondsenough's enough with the US House Ethics Committee.
Even our state Republican lawmakers here in the UP said Jack Bergman's a liar and he's no good for minutes, 53 secondsthe folks in the upper peninsula.
On top of this with our veterans, he is protecting claim sharks that have illegally ripped off our veterans minutes, 2 secondsthousands of dollars in their veteran benefit claims.
And I know that I'm an attorney.
So, that's what I mean when I say enough's enough and it's time for a change.
minutes, 10 secondsWell, there's something to be said about uh an incumbent in that they they have repeated terms in in in Congress and uh carry some clout with that.
minutes, 19 secondsUh Jack Bergman will be going for his sixth term as I recall.
Uh you would be going for your first.
minutes, 25 secondsSo, what again what in your background qualifies you to be a congressional representative?
minutes, 31 secondsGreat question.
um a a a member of Congress is by definition a law maker.
minutes, 36 secondsUh as an attorney that's I know the law and right now we're looking at of course wanting to maintain a status as a nation minutes, 44 secondsof laws.
To me that means no one's above the law.
We follow the law and that's why I am so dogged on going after corruption and lowering our costs and minutes, 53 secondsmaking sure as a lawmaker that folks like my neighbors that we have the opportunity here afforded to us by the minutes, 1 secondconstitution and as a lawyer um I am well qualified to take on that role as a law maker um for us.
You touched on the minutes, 11 secondseconomy uh and the way things are going right now.
As a congressional representative from the upper peninsula, minutes, 18 secondswhat what if anything can you do to help turn that around?
What isn't being done now?
minutes, 24 secondsWell, for one, for starters, we know this war in Iran is increasing our gas prices, increasing the price of diesel.
minutes, 31 secondsThat's increasing the cost of pretty much everything.
It means that folks here are making really hard choices between filling their grocery cart or minutes, 38 secondstheir gas tank.
So, what I would not do is support policies that we know are bad for us.
Um, we need to make sure that folks can afford to go to the doctor.
Um, Jack Bergman defunded he he made cuts to funding for our rural hospitals.
Our hospitals are our largest employer.
minutes, 56 secondsAnd so what we want to make sure we're doing is making good investments for us, helping our small businesses, not supporting tariffs that are hurting our minutes, 4 secondssmall businesses, not so cutting funding that helps our hospitals, and certainly not supporting a war um that's increasing the cost of gas and everything else.
minutes, 12 secondsSo what concerns are top of mind for you right now if if you are elected uh come day one, who are you going to be aligning with and what types of issues are you going to be trying to advance?
minutes, 22 secondsThank you.
I will work with anyone to lower costs and to go after the type of corruption that is driving up our costs.
minutes, 28 secondsI need we need to take care of our hospitals here.
We need to make sure folks can go to the doctor.
We have the oldest congressional district in minutes, 36 secondsMichigan.
So that means as you age, you need more care, not less.
I also think we need to make sure that we're protecting social security.
That will minutes, 44 secondsnot be solvent in 2032. and we're going to need an act of Congress to make sure that folks who have who have earned this um put into it their whole life that it's there for them.
minutes, 55 secondsBeyond being a Democrat, how would you describe your political values or leanings both socially and fiscally?
minutes, 2 secondsAh, that's a great question.
I I love this country.
I'm a patriot.
That's what I would say.
I'm a patriot.
I love this country.
And I would say, you know, for minutes, 11 secondsthis congressional seat, this is not a seat for Republicans or Democrats.
This is a seat for the people of Upper and minutes, 18 secondsNorthern Michigan.
Um, you know, when I when I think about making an economy work, that the more people that can participate in an economy, the better.
minutes, 28 secondsRight now, we have a system where we have Jack Bergman has given tax breaks to the wealthiest folks who have ever existed while cutting funding for our minutes, 36 secondsrural hospitals, for example.
I don't support that.
I support a fair economy.
minutes, 41 secondsA fair economy and not one where you go to Washington DC and you rip off the taxpayer.
I tell you there's so much concern out there right now about the rhetoric and the political divide in this country and that it's it's damaging our democracy.
minutes, 56 secondsWhat is your view about this and what if anything again as a representative could you do to improve the political climate?
Yeah, we need to meet with each other.
minutes, 4 secondsWe have to listen.
We have to talk to each other.
You know, I committed very early on in this campaign to hold holding public town halls and getting minutes, 12 secondsall around this district and I've done that.
We need to meet with each other and work with anyone we can to make sure we're delivering results for folks.
You minutes, 20 secondsknow, Jack Bergman handed us bills, not results.
And he hasn't had a town hall in almost eight years now.
That's not okay.
And what that means to me is you minutes, 29 secondsthink that you can just um go to Washington DC and you're not actually representing the folks who sent you there.
And I think if we are able to minutes, 37 secondsmeet face tof face with people, sit down and have a conversation, we are much we are going to be a much better spot to work together to do the things we need minutes, 45 secondsto do for the people we love and care about.
Please elaborate on on the district.
minutes, 50 secondsIt's so large.
U how would you as a congressperson get back into the district and maintain minutes, 58 secondsthose connections with your constituents?
minutesIt it absolutely.
So, I've committed when I'm in office, I will hold a public town hall every month rotating between minutes, 7 secondsthe upper peninsula and the lower peninsula.
One thing I would also love to do is have a mobile office so that you know we have a very rural large minutes, 15 secondsdistrict.
It's hard sometimes for folks to get into a congressional office.
I want to make access very easy.
I want to make sure that folks can meet and give minutes, 23 secondstheir concerns, their criticism, their whatever they need, right?
I want to meet I want to make sure we can do a good job and deliver results for people.
minutes, 30 secondsSo I think a mobile office would be a great way to do that.
minutes, 33 secondsSo as a state or a country uh you know where do you feel we are failing right now and need to do better?
What what issues can be approved upon through legislation?
minutes, 42 secondsYeah.
You know 250 years ago when this country was founded it was founded on the idea that all men are equal that everyone deserves to have a shot.
minutes, 54 secondsRight now, what we're seeing is an economy that's been co-opted by the extreme extremely wealthy and powerful.
minutes, 3 secondsAnd I think very much what we are up against right now is a fight to matter, a fight to matter for the next 100 to minutes, 10 seconds200 years.
And so to me, it's do we really believe all people are equal?
Do we really think everyone should have a minutes, 18 secondsshot?
and remembering that we are Americans first and we need each other to continue to forge towards that future minutes, 25 secondswhich in its time truly was a city on a hill and gave hope to the world and I believe we can still do that.
minutes, 32 secondsThere does seem to be a a political game that needs to be played when you become a congressperson.
Uh and again if if you were to uh obtain the seat Yes.
minutes, 41 secondsyou'd be a newbie.
So are you ready to play that game?
You know, I was a litigation attorney and one thing that I minutes, 49 secondsalways felt is that when you were negotiating an agreement, if you both walked away from the table kind of angry, you probably had a great an a minutes, 56 secondsgreat agreement on the on the table.
And so to me, it's being willing to work with anyone to lower costs, fight corruption, and get results.
And I'm minutes, 4 secondscommitted to doing that.
Again, this is not a seat for Republicans or Democrats.
minutes, 8 secondsIt's a seat for the people of Upper and Northern Michigan.
This is country over party.
This is making sure we take care of each other.
Government should work for us.
minutes, 16 secondsI often ask this next question, but I'm always intrigued with the answers.
minutes, 20 secondsReaching consensus is key to advancing legislation.
Yes.
minutes, 25 secondsCan you provide an example of how you've brought opposing parties together to reach consensus?
minutes, 31 secondsYes.
Well, I have two um teenage daughters.
minutes, 36 seconds[LAUGHTER] I see the smile.
You know where this is going, right?
minutes, 40 secondswe are often at odds and have to find find consensus.
Um, no, in in all seriousness, um, yes.
Uh, you know, minutes, 49 secondsagain, I think about my my experience as an attorney where you have an agreement that you need to reach and and it takes a lot of hard work and making sure that minutes, 58 secondsthe thing is though, if your values if your values you want what's best for people, you can usually come up with a pretty good agreement.
And I've been minutes, 7 secondsable to do that.
I've been able to settle cases, you know, I've been able to work with veterans to get them the benefits that they need and I'm proud of minutes, 15 secondsthat work and I and I feel very strongly that if you send me to Congress, um, I can I can deliver on that.
minutes, 20 secondsAre you confident that can extend to getting the dollars that are needed to serve a rural region?
minutes, 26 secondsYes.
And that's that's the other thing, right?
I feel like we have been so neglected as a congressional district minutes, 33 secondsfor so long.
And by being able to be a real voice, that's exactly what we need to have happen.
I mean, you can look at minutes, 41 secondswhat happened with the recent ice storm in this district is just one example where we did need funding and and Jack Bergman wasn't there to deliver on that minutes, 49 secondsfor us.
I mean, so there's lots of examples where we need to make sure that we are we're raising our hand when it's minutes, 56 secondsavailable to us, you know, and I even think about like the Soolocks where we had infrastructure investment act to help um with our infrastructure costs.
minutes, 4 secondsHe voted against that.
Right.
So, what I want to make sure is that when we've got dollars we can bring in, we're supporting that.
That's a good thing.
We want to do that.
minutes, 12 secondsUh, Callie Barr, we're down to our final minute and I want to reserve that time for you to make that case to voters as to why they should consider voting for you.
minutes, 20 secondsPlease, enough.
Enough is enough.
And it is time for a change.
We don't have to accept corruption.
We don't have to minutes, 27 secondsaccept higher costs.
We don't have to accept not mattering.
The thing is, we matter.
And this fight matters and I'd minutes, 35 secondsask you to join me to take this seat for the people of Upper and Northern Michigan.
My website is Cali Cal Lie for minutes, 43 secondsCongress.com.
Please come join the movement.
Thank you so much.
Cali Bar, thank you for joining us today.
Uh stay tuned, folks.
In just a moment, we will hear from the Republican hoping to retain his congressional seat, Jack Bergman.
minutes, 59 secondsMichigan's Upper Peninsula isn't (music) just where we broadcast.
It's our home.
minutes, 5 secondsIt's the people (music) we meet, the communities we reach, and the families that invite us into their homes.
From classrooms to farmers markets, concerts minutes, 14 seconds(music) to neighborhood events, WNMU Public Media is committed to making a difference both (music) on the air and minutes, 21 secondsin person.
Proudly serving the Upper Peninsula, (music) where our greatest stories begin with you.
minutes, 29 secondsWelcome back to Media Meet and our Michigan first congressional district candidate forum.
You just heard from Democratic candidate Callie Barr.
Now it's minutes, 37 secondstime to hear from the Republican candidate, a gentleman seeking his sixth term as our representative in Washington, Congressman Jack Bergman.
minutes, 44 secondsWelcome back to Media Meet.
minutes, 46 secondsGood morning.
Great to be back with you and all your listeners.
minutes, 49 secondsWell, it's great to have you here, uh, Representative Bergman.
Now, for folks that may not know who you are, I know you're going for a sixth term, but you minutes, 57 secondsknow, hey, some of these potential voters were eight years old when you were first going to Congress.
So, tell us more about yourself and your background and why you do want to go back to Washington.
Absolutely.
Well, you know, it's it's it's very appropriate that here we are in 2026 because it was a hundred years ago that minutes, 14 secondsmy father, who was born and raised in Ironwood, left the UP as an 18-year-old minutes, 21 secondsbecause there was no work.
And he and a couple of his buddies literally hitchhiked down to Minneapolis to find work.
I was born and raised down in minutes, 29 secondslittle farm town south of Minneapolis, but I came back to the UP 30 years ago.
minutes, 34 secondsBut why I am continuing to do what I do is remembering what my father said about minutes, 42 secondsthe UP when I asked him in the mid late 50s, "Dad, why don't we move up here?
It's such a great place."
And he said, "Son, the UP is a great place to be from with a certain sadness that he viewed it minutes, 55 secondsas a place without the opportunity for young men and women to get a good education, go to work, live in a small town, hunt, fish, do what they do."
So, minutes, 4 secondsone of the reasons I decided to run 10 years ago was I believe the UP is still minutes, 11 secondsa great place to build, raise a family, start a business, enjoy the outdoors.
So, for my 10 years, minutes, 20 secondsuh, five terms, uh, I've served on mo probably the most important committee of all is the budget committee because we minutes, 29 secondsdon't have a revenue problem in our country.
We have a spending problem in our country.
I also serve on armed minutes, 37 secondsservices subcommittee chairman on readiness this cycle and also my first choice 10 years ago which I'm still on the committee is veterans affairs and minutes, 46 secondsgood lord willing and things go positive there's a pretty strong chance that I will be the next chairman of the veterans affairs committee in the next minutes, 54 secondscongress.
So my why is to make the UP and and northern lower Michigan a better minutes, 2 secondsplace, but especially here in the UP because we have such a spectacular, you know, group [snorts] of people who've minutes, 9 secondschosen to live here and it's fun to represent them in Washington DC because I get to tell stories that people who minutes, 17 secondslive and grew up in big cities, they have no clue what it's like here when you just got four feet of snow, you know, and oh, by the way, it's end of minutes, 24 secondsMarch.
uh whatever it happens to be.
But uh every day our staff, whether it's minutes, 30 secondshere in the district or in DC, uh gets up every day and does constituent service, whether it's uh minutes, 37 secondsclawing money back from the government that is owed to people, whether it's helping a a business uh uh navigate its way through the the agencies for minutes, 46 secondsapproval.
So during my my decade here, and it's gone fast.
It's really gone fast, but we're minutes, 54 secondsjust warming up because built the relationships both Democrat and Republican.
Uh, and that's sadly you don't see enough of that on on the media minutes, 2 secondsbecause we have Democrats and Republicans who work together all day every day in Washington DC, but that's not exciting.
But I'm running again minutes, 10 secondsbecause I got a lot of irons on the fire.
We've done a lot so far and I believe in the people.
minutes, 16 secondsWell, you've raised several uh potential questions for me to ask.
Uh you talked about the opportunity that exists here in the upper peninsula.
Let's talk about affordability, the high cost of living.
minutes, 26 secondsIt is a huge concern for many of your constituents.
You know, Republicans have had control of Congress the past two years, and yet the problem is minutes, 34 secondspersisting.
So why shouldn't voters want to clean House or clean the House?
Great.
minutes, 40 secondsUh uh and elect representatives who might be more responsive to the needs of the district.
minutes, 45 secondsWell, let's put it this way.
When you talk about affordability, if you say you had a starting line and you're starting at the starting line to minutes, 53 secondsmove forward with our policies, you know, over the last, you know, couple of years, especially, even though we've had control of the House for four years, we minutes, 2 secondshaven't had, we've only had control of the White House for the last two years.
We didn't start from ground zero.
We had to start from four years of devastation minutes, 13 secondsof the previous administration, shutting down the energy industry.
Why are gas prices so high?
It's not Iran.
minutes, 22 secondsIs that a small part of it?
Yes.
It's the shutting down of the refineries.
It's the shutting down of the pipelines.
minutes, 29 secondsIt's the shutting down of everything.
So the cost and the affordability we had to start two years ago with getting minutes, 38 secondsstarting to mitigate the negatives of the last four years.
Uh is it going to be affordable?
Yes, it's going to be affordable.
minutes, 49 secondsBut the policies that we have put in place with the availability of everything from uh all sources of minutes, 59 secondsenergy, natural gas, the beginnings of small modular reactors to begin to be minutes, 5 secondsconsidered the the things that we have here naturally, but the building uh of minutes, 11 secondsuh again if I don't want to focus all on fuel, but think about this.
If you're a home builder and you want to build a minutes, 19 secondshouse, think of all the hoops and the regulations you have to jump through.
minutes, 23 secondsThose are local things.
I talk to the builders all the time.
They said, "Well, if the township of this or that county could just just stop with the goofy minutes, 32 secondsregulations, we could build a house a lot less expensively.
So then the affordability, especially in the minutes, 40 secondshousing, uh, comes naturally.
But the regulation upon regulation upon regulation and they're not federal, they're state and local.
minutes, 49 secondsWell, to go on this a little bit more though, the the cost of gas is significantly higher than it was one year ago.
And yet you're minutes, 57 secondssaying Iran really isn't responsible the the war with Iran for that.
Um you realize of course why we are doing what we're doing in Iran, right?
minutes, 7 secondsWell, I this is this was my next question.
I want to hear, especially from a a Marine, what what your thoughts are about the war.
minutes, 14 secondsI mean, I'm I'm going to really truncate this, but my first um interactions with Iran was in 1964 minutes, 24 secondswhen my best friend in high school was an Iranian foreign exchange student.
minutes, 29 secondsOkay.
And we got I got to hear from him and know him over the year.
My second interaction with Iranians was in 1972 minutes, 37 secondswhen I came back from Vietnam and we were training Iranian flight students in Pensacola, Florida.
Okay.
So we have had minutes, 46 secondssince the 60s but especially after 1979 if you want to there every president well Jimmy Carter started the ball minutes, 55 secondsrolling the negative way but every president whether it's Ronald Reagan either one of the Bushes Bill Clinton minutes, 2 secondsPresident Obama President Biden have had the opportunity to ensure that Iran never gained minutes, 12 secondsenriched nuclear capability Because unlike China, Russia, um the Ukraine when they had them, but Turkey, all the minutes, 21 secondsnations that have Israel, all the nations that have nuclear capability, the Iranians, this is this is an minutes, 28 secondsunclassified intelligence assessment, the Iranians do not possess the ability to not use it.
All these other nations minutes, 36 secondsthat I just mentioned have nuclear capability, but they have the self-restraint.
minutes, 43 secondsSo, we cannot allow, oil aside, the Iranians cannot be allowed to have enriched uranium because minutes, 50 secondsthe first thing they'll do is blow up their neighbors.
Are you satisfied with how this uh war with Iran has played out?
I mean, minutes, 59 secondsthe the president was saying it'd be a matter of weeks or months.
Uh, and now it seems to be kind of stagnant.
Uh I um you know I've played a lot of different roles in uniform uh during my time and in my my time right now as the chairman minutes, 14 secondsof the readiness subcommittee on armed services I do most most of the dealings I have there are classified.
minutes, 21 secondsSo I am not concerned about the long-term outcome here.
If gas prices are going to be a little bit higher for minutes, 29 secondsa time, one of the things we need to do, and I'm sure you all know that one of the reasons is that Illinois refinery that went down that we've got the supply minutes, 39 secondsof oil regardless of the straight of Hermoose, the last administration shut down the refining.
That's the problem.
So, uh, if the polls are correct, uh, oftentimes they are not, uh, there's a decent chance that the Democrats will minutes, 56 secondstake control of the House of Representatives.
If they do, how does that or how would that change how you work with the other side of the aisle and legislate?
minutes, 5 secondsIt wouldn't change anything at all because I some of my colleagues that I came in with there, we had a class when you total up Republicans and Democrats minutes, 13 secondsof roughly 60 new representatives 10 years ago.
Uh, probably half the people are still there.
I I have working minutes, 21 secondsrelationships with my colleagues on the other side.
Uh it's a balance of the House of Representatives.
I won't speak minutes, 28 secondsfor the Senate.
The Senate does what it does, but the House of Representatives uh has a has a priority of of of things minutes, 38 secondsthey want to get done and who'sever in the majority is going to control that priority.
But we still, for example, in my case, sitting on Veterans Affairs, minutes, 46 secondsum, we need to make sure that the Veterans Administration serves the veterans and their families, not the Veterans Administration.
A minutes, 54 secondsselfserving bureaucracy is kind of like a self-licking ice cream cone.
Okay?
It never ends well, but nobody cares.
But minutes, 3 secondsmy focus again working with Democrats uh whether it be to nobody wants to be defrauded of minutes, 11 secondsanything.
Okay, waste is you hear the term waste, fraud, and abuse.
Waste is natural.
Control the waste.
Abuse take minutes, 19 secondsout take out people out of positions who are abusing their power.
And it's usually we're talking about in bureaucracies here.
But the amount of minutes, 27 secondsfraud that we have in our country sadly is taking such a chunk out of the taxpayers's dollars going all the way back to the affordability.
minutes, 38 secondsIf we can reduce the fraud and we have reduced the the fraud in the you know in the federal government area in the last minutes, 45 secondscouple of years because that's what the administration has focus focused on and we're going to continue to focus on it.
minutes, 50 secondsI would not want to be a a fraudster uh stealing from the federal government cuz we're coming after you.
minutes, 58 secondsI only have about 20 seconds for this response, but what is the number one issue you'll be working on when you go back in January?
If you go back, uh I mean, when I go back in January, it's going to be the availability of rural health care.
