-Reparation is the key.
-That includes a measure that will go before voters in November that could change the state constitution to end forced prison labor.
-ACA 8, the End Slavery in California Act, which will be presented on the ballot as Prop 7, aims to eliminate involuntary servitude from our state constitution without exception.
We are asking voters to support this historic measure and ensure that every individual in California is treated with dignity and respect.
-Caucus members and other reparations supporters say they plan to have State of Black California community listening sessions in six cities over the next five months.
The Black Caucus' 14 reparations bills tackle education, business, criminal justice, healthcare, and civil rights.
They also just convinced Governor Gavin Newsom to include $12 million for reparations measures in the state budget.
-I consider the governor's allocation of $12 million for reparation resources a big win for the California Legislative Black Caucus, as well as all California.
-California became the first state in the country to form a reparations task force three years ago, and it was the first to introduce a comprehensive reparations package of more than 100 recommendations last year.
Some Black California legislatures noted that Republican colleagues have pledged to vote against reparations bills, and some Democrats have expressed reservations but lawmakers say they will continue to build support for their reparations bills through their listening tour.
They plan to start with modest measures that could serve as proof of concept.
As Assemblymember Corey Jackson says: -Because no matter what legislation is passed, if we don't get to work, we can't put those laws into effect in a meaningful way.
