RICARDO: Hi, I'm Ricardo, I'm a native Washingtonian.
JEN: And I'm Jen.
I've lived in all four quadrants of the District.
RICARDO: We're best friends who want to show you around the DMV.
JEN: Today, we'll tour three open houses in the Woodridge, Langdon neighborhood.
RICARDO: We're going to try to guess each list price without going over.
JEN: And together, we'll find out what it would be like...
BOTH: If you lived here!
(doorbell) MELANIE: Hello.
JEN: Good morning, Melanie.
MELANIE: Good morning and welcome to the Woodridge, Langdon area.
I wanted us to start here at the Chuck Brown Memorial Park because it's such a picturesque, beautiful park.
You have skateboarding, and it's just stone's throw to Rhode Island Avenue, which is the main hub of Woodridge.
RICARDO: We grew up listening to Chuck Brown in the backyard during the summer, whenever we would have barbecues or picnics, so this is an absolute treat.
JEN: So, when I first moved to DC, Northeast was my inaugural quadrant, and I'm disappointed that I didn't actually get down here.
So, I'm really glad to be visiting today.
MELANIE: A lot of people don't know how amazing this area is.
It's right on the border of Maryland, but it's so close, just 15 minutes from Capitol Hill.
I had an aunt that had a property here, growing up, so I would often go over to her house, and wanted to stay there more than my own home because these homes are so gigantic, and I just felt like, she has a mansion and I belong there.
Woodridge is very unique because it does have a large selection of single-family, fully detached homes and they come at a comparatively lower cost than what you would pay in a more central part of the city.
JEN: Yeah, we absolutely noticed that on our way in.
So many big porches, so many beautiful yards.
MELANIE: So, you get the urban lifestyle with a touch of suburbia.
JEN: Yeah.
MELANIE: Almost the best of both worlds.
RICARDO: I'm ready to get started with house number one.
MELANIE: Actually, the first home is just a few steps away.
RICARDO: Let's get to stepping.
MELANIE: All right.
RICARDO: Is it alright if I call you Mel?
MELANIE: Of course.
RICARDO: Oh, great.
(doorbell) This is nice.
MELANIE: Welcome to house number one.
What we have here is a eight-unit boutique condo, and you'll see a lot more of these coming up in the area rather than the big massive buildings that used to come about.
JEN: You know, we are on a bustling area of Rhode Island Avenue, but it's really green and quiet back here.
RICARDO: Yeah.
MELANIE: It's so private, so secluded.
It's very peaceful back here.
RICARDO: And I have to say, I'm a big fan of new construction and this looks brand new.
MELANIE: This is brand spanking new, just this year.
There's a keyless entry, and you also have some bike racks for your convenience, and it's pet-friendly, so you can bring all your furry friends with you.
JEN: Let's bring all of our furry friends next time.
RICARDO: Hey, say less.
MELANIE: All right, well please go inside and let me know what you think.
JEN: We'll see you afterwards for the game.
MELANIE: See you then.
RICARDO: Hey.
JEN: Ooh, nice and bright.
RICARDO: Yeah.
JEN: I really like the living space, certainly room for a TV, have your couch, have your furry friends on your lap.
RICARDO: Yeah, look at this window here, lets in a lot of light.
JEN: And I think that these light laminate floors really help keep it bright.
RICARDO: Mm-hmm.
JEN: Let's take a peek at this kitchen.
RICARDO: Yeah.
I love the appliances.
They all look fresh and new.
JEN: I like the hardware, matching not only the faucet, but really tying in these quartz countertops.
RICARDO: Yeah, and the backsplash also keeps the space bright and open.
JEN: Yeah, it's got a little ripple to it, which makes it a little different.
RICARDO: It's fun.
JEN: Yeah, let's see what else we got.
RICARDO: Okay.
JEN: Oh, this is a big bathroom.
RICARDO: Oh, this is a nice size.
It's also very bright in here.
I love the counter here.
It's similar to the counter in the kitchen.
JEN: And they also conveyed the black hardware.
I really love it in the shower as well.
RICARDO: Yeah, it's a great contrast to the tile work.
JEN: Doesn't have the ripple in here, but I think I like it.
Nice size bedroom.
RICARDO: Yeah, nice big window in here.
JEN: Yeah, and a lot of storage in this double door closet.
This unit has a lot of storage so far.
RICARDO: Yeah.
JEN: All right.
RICARDO: Let's keep going.
JEN: Okay, look at all the light, and while you don't have a ton of outdoor space access, this almost makes it feel like you do.
RICARDO: Yeah, I love a Juliet balcony.
JEN: Yeah.
RICARDO: Let in a fresh breeze.
A sliding door, which keeps a door from invading the space.
JEN: Well, I think it's about that time.
RICARDO: To find Melanie?
JEN: Yeah.
RICARDO: You ready to lose?
JEN: Game number one, am I ready to lose?
RICARDO: Mm-hmm.
JEN: No, I'm feeling fresh today, but thanks for asking.
RICARDO: Then bring it.
JEN: Oh-ho!
MELANIE: Welcome back.
JEN: Thanks, Mel.
MELANIE: All right, so, what did you think about house number one?
JEN: So bright.
RICARDO: So bright.
JEN: Yeah.
RICARDO: I absolutely love the big windows, letting in all of that light.
JEN: Yeah, it really made the space feel very open, airy, just very spacious, given the square footage.
RICARDO: I love how cohesive the unit is.
You've got the floors... MELANIE: Mm-hmm.
RICARDO: That are consistent throughout.
The hardware in the kitchen and in the bathroom.
JEN: Yeah, the sinks, the shower head.
It's small details sometimes that you don't pay attention to... MELANIE: Right.
JEN: That, in the long run, really do kind of elevate a unit.
MELANIE: It does.
RICARDO: So, I'm curious, what exactly is the condo fee for the unit?
MELANIE: It is 196 a month, and that does include a utility, the water bill.
JEN: Oh.
RICARDO: Oh.
MELANIE: Yes, so, that's one bill you don't have to worry about.
RICARDO: Time for some really long showers.
MELANIE: All right!
JEN: Yeah!
So, before we get to the game, can you give us the specs on the property?
MELANIE: It's two bedrooms, one bath, 500 square feet, and it was built in 2024.
RICARDO: Jumping in with 400,000.
MELANIE: Okay.
JEN: All right.
RICARDO: Yeah.
JEN: I'm gonna be a little more conservative and I'm gonna guess 369,000.
MELANIE: Well, the price is, drum roll... 375.
RICARDO: Oh!
MELANIE: Jen, you're the winner!
RICARDO: Congratulations, Jen.
JEN: Oh, thank you.
MELANIE: Next time, You have two chances to redeem yourself.
RICARDO: That's right.
You're going down.
JEN: All right, well, let's go down to property number two.
MELANIE: All right.
RICARDO: All right, that sounds good.
MELANIE: Let's go.
JEN: Woo-hoo!
Big winner.
JEREMIAH: Woodridge is an interesting place.
Bladensburg Road is actually the first authorized toll road in the country.
So, that goes back to 1814 and Congress actually chartered it and it was to connect Baltimore to the permanent seat of government.
So, that members of the House and the Senate could easily get to Congress.
Clark Mills came between 1840 and 1845.
He was a sculptor.
He cast the statue of Andrew Jackson and George Washington.
So, he needed a larger place to be able to do larger statues.
And so, when the opportunity came to do the Statue of Freedom on the Capitol building, Woodridge was perfect.
He built his foundry where the present-day Metro bus garage is.
The original Statue of Freedom was constructed in Italy and it was transported to Washington.
Clark Mills had an enslaved apprentice named Philip Reed.
Philip Reed, after studying the statue, figured out how to disassemble it without, uh, damaging it, and supervised the transportation of it out to the new Mills Studio, and that's where it would be cast.
Philip Reed is the only enslaved person who worked on the Capitol.
It's documented that his X is on this pay voucher.
When the Civil War was over, there was expectation that a lot of troops would leave Washington.
They didn't.
So, the railroad community started to show up.
The early houses were just small, one-and two-story on very narrow parcels of land.
Larger houses came and, in 1914, when the subdivisions were set up, white folks had moved out here and they bought their own prejudices and predispositions on who could live here and who they wanted around them, and they wrote them into the, uh, the deeds.
Black folks didn't move into the area until 1952, 1958.
So, there are families here who have stayed here because they earned the right to stay and they remember what it was when we were told you couldn't be someplace.
The saying is, in Woodridge, "A good community, getting better."
So, it is always evolving.
MUHAMMAD: The Museum Shop is a creative space to curate fashion and art and build in the community.
Back in the late 80s, early 90s, streetwear brands meant so much to the city, but we saw that none of those stores were here anymore.
So, we sat down, and we was like, "Man, maybe we can do our own store."
In May 2016 is when we dropped our first item, which was the hat, and we sold out fast.
The multi-colored logo has the colors of our Metro rail system, here in DC, and then it has all the love on the side, right here, "For the love of the city."
We've seen a lot of, not just athletes, but celebrities to wear our brand.
The first shoe that we designed for Steph Curry was the Curry 1.
We put DC lingo on there at the bottom of the soles.
The initial conversation between us and the Commanders was an opportunity to design the guest services uniforms.
The season opener, we watched 200-plus people walking all with the polo and the hat on.
It's one of those wow moments when, like, I was speechless to see my logo on so many people.
The one thing I love about having a storefront on Rhode Island Avenue is the community.
It's one thing for people to see the owners inside their facility working.
It's just a different feeling, that's that community-based, you know, that-that-that would just carry you over for 20 years and keep customers keep coming back and keep coming back, and they feel like this is home.
(doorbell) JEN: Look at this.
RICARDO: Wow.
MELANIE: Welcome to house number two.
JEN: This property really stands out in this neighborhood, given this very unique choice of color.
MELANIE: So, it's almost 120 years old... JEN: Wow.
MELANIE: But the developer wanted to preserve the look.
And so, he decided to keep the original frame.
Here's the home before the renovation.
JEN: Oh, my gosh.
MELANIE: So, as you can see, it still looks the same, pretty much, from the façade, but with a facelift and some new love put into it.
RICARDO: I can totally see that the basic design of the home is exactly what it used to be.
The facelift was well done.
MELANIE: Yes.
JEN: Yeah.
RICARDO: Right?
Kudos to the surgeon.
MELANIE: Absolutely.
JEN: Especially with the orange door.
RICARDO: Nice and welcoming and inviting.
Well, I can't wait to take a look and we will find you afterwards to play game number two.
MELANIE: All right, I look forward to it.
JEN: All right, Mel.
RICARDO: All right.
JEN: See you in a bit.
MELANIE: All right.

RICARDO: Get that orange door open.
JEN: Yes!
RICARDO: Ooh.
JEN: Oh, ooh-la-la.
RICARDO: This is unexpected.
JEN: I was not expecting bright, bright, bright.
RICARDO: I love the high ceilings.
I love that there's even a skylight in there.
JEN: I love the open banister because it's making this room feel open and bright.
RICARDO: Mm-hmm.
This fireplace, I have to say, is a great touch.
JEN: Yeah.
RICARDO: So, my eye is drawn back here to the kitchen area.
I'd love to check this out.
JEN: Beautiful.
Lead the way.
RICARDO: Okay.
Follow me.
I've not seen tile like this before.
JEN: The little glint of silver really does make me smile and it complements the stainless steel appliances.
And how beautiful is this island?
RICARDO: This is gorgeous and did you notice that the cabinets are actually two different colors?
JEN: Oh, yeah.
I love the two-tone.
It looks like there's a pantry with a barn door.
RICARDO: There's so much space in there.
And this doesn't take up too much space in the room.
JEN: No, and it's pretty quiet too.
RICARDO: Yeah.
JEN: And then, this amazing deck, so much space out there.
RICARDO: Oh, it's so great to have a yard this size in the District.
JEN: I know that you're chomping to get out there, but we have so much house left.
RICARDO: All right.
JEN: Come on.
What's over here?
All right, they've staged it as an office but, given that it has this massive closet and a full bathroom... RICARDO: Mm-hmm, that's crazy.
JEN: It could absolutely just be a bedroom.
I really love the tile work and the recessed area there for your products.
RICARDO: And that waterfall shower head looks great too.

JEN: Okay, I'm gonna go a little bit higher and I'm gonna guess 1,400,000.
MELANIE: The actual list price is 1.399,999.
RICARDO: What?
MELANIE: So, Ricardo, you're the winner, and I'm sorry.
It looks like you lost by a dollar.
RICARDO: You were really close.
So... MELANIE: You were very close.
JEN: Oh, man.
MELANIE: So, how about my treat to a very popular restaurant on Rhode Island Avenue called His & Hers?
JEN: Aww, His & Hers.
RICARDO: Well... MELANIE: That's right.
Something for us all.
JEN: Yeah.
RICARDO: Thank you, Mel.
MELANIE: All right, let's go.
JEN: All right.
RICARDO: So sorry, friend.
JEN: Oh, man, you owe me a dollar.
(laughter).
DEON: You cannot come to the Woodridge neighborhood and not go to Zeke's Coffee, probably on the weekends, early in the morning.
It's a neighborhood gathering spot where all the residents come together.
LISA: I like living in Langdon, 'cause it's like you in the suburbs in the city.
It's very quiet, doesn't look like DC at all.
BRIA: I would encourage you to visit Rhode Island Row.
There are a lot of Black-owned businesses.
ANGEL: The Spice Suite is a spice shop and a dream incubator.
Um, so, we sell spices, honeys, balsamics, all sorts of products from all over the world.
OCTAVIA: We have big backyards and friendly neighbors.
I can attest to that.
