I've never been.

LAURITA: So I think it's gonna take us about maybe three hours, maybe a little over three hours.

I know there's so much more to explore, so let's go out and see what else the place has to offer.

MATT: So Oak Lodge is located in Stahlstown, Pennsylvania which is located in the heart of Laurel Highlands.

We're an 800-acre bed and breakfast, event venue.

A private property for many years, we decided to open it up to the public back in 2006.

And just over the years, we just continued to evolve.

And we found that people from all over the US really enjoy coming here just escaping from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and, and really just kinda getting out in nature.

We basically have three levels to our property.

The first level as you come up, it's basically all the cabins.

We have 19 of them.

And then you step up to the next level of the property, and that's where our main lodge is located.

It's also where our, our spa is located, which is just a great place to just relax and just escape everything, clear the mind.

It, it's wonderful.

The third level as you move up to, uh, the top, that's where our 17th century village is located, complete with a tavern, and that's also where our recession hall is.

2001 is when we built the tavern, and then 2003 I was getting married, and they decided to build us a, a church for our wedding, a rustic log chapel.

In reality, we thought we'd be the only ones ever to get married in it.

And now, we've had hundreds and hundreds of couples from all over the country come up here to enjoy a wedding.

Everybody comes up here is always just blown away.

You know, it's kinda this hidden gem.

You can't see it from anywhere until you're actually up here.

And just listen to the musical that happens every morning, evening here at Oak Lodge.

It's really something special.

(birds chirping) LAURITA: So we're now headed out of Oak Lodge, and this was such a nice place for us to start the weekend.

LAUREN: Now, we're off to go meet Anna and we're gonna know all about the Laurel Highlands.

So welcome to charming little Ligonier.

This is quintessential Americana here.

There's 60-some odd cafes, boutiques and shops here in town.

LAURITA: Ooh.

ANNA: Uh, just perfect for walking around and exploring.

Got a little, uh, Norman Rockwell vibe to it, but if you're into pop culture, a lot of folks refer to this as Stars Hollow from Gilmore Girls.

LAUREN: I love Gilmore Girls.

ANNA: Well, I'm so glad to welcome you here.

LAURITA: Right up her alley.

ANNA: This is such a special part of Pennsylvania here.

We're super close to Pittsburgh, obviously, so we have this reputation as Pittsburgh's adventure backyard.

So you can do anything from a casual walk through the woods... LAURITA: Mm.

ANNA: Or a, a meander down to a waterfall in Ohiopyle... LAUREN: Mm.

ANNA: State Park or take in an expansive view at Baughman Rocks in the park.

LAURITA: Ah.

ANNA: Yeah, there really is just a ton of outdoor recreation.

The region itself is the brand that Laurel Highlands comes from the mountain laurel, which is Pennsylvania's state flower, and highlands because of our mountainous terrain... LAURITA: Yes.

ANNA: And our rolling farmland.

And then after you're done with that, you have to visit Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater.

Without a doubt.

It's a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

LAUREN: All right, so I'm a big foodie.

What are some specialty dishes that you have here?

ANNA: Well, in the Laurel Highlands, we are all about comfort food.

LAUREN: Mm.

ANNA: That's our specialty, for sure.

So our culture here is a lot of Eastern European immigrants coming to the area and bringing a lot of their traditional dishes.

So for instance, one of our favorites, it's called a gob.

LAURITA: Hmm.

Oh.

LAUREN: See, when I think of gob, I think of a gobstopper.

(laughter).

ANNA: Not quite.

So a gob is this wonderful little baked good.

It is traditionally a chocolate cake, a very dense chocolate cake, on either side sandwiched with a vanilla icing.

LAUREN: Ooh.

LAURITA: Ooh.

ANNA: It's amazing.

And the term gob comes from the coal miners in our area would have this beautiful treat wrapped up in wax paper and it wouldn't melt.

It would hold itself together.

So when they were down underground for long hours, they had this wonderful little treat to, to enjoy afterward.

So nowadays, we jazz it up a little bit and there's all kinds of variations.

And I've brought some for you to try out.

LAURITA: Well, let's go.

ANNA: All right, let's hit the road.

LAURITA: It looks... LAUREN: Oh my goodness.

LAURITA: Amazing.

Would you sit and explain the food to us?

ELIZABETH: It would be my pleasure.

ELIZABETH: That's cabbage and noodle.

ELIZABETH: We use drop noodle and we have to fry the cabbage and mix 'em together.

LAURITA: Mmm.

The cabbage has a nice little tang to it.

LAUREN: Yeah.

ELIZABETH: Yes, it... LAURITA: It's really crunchy.

ELIZABETH: Black pepper.

It has, yes.

LAURITA: Yes.

This is one of your recipes.

ELIZABETH: Yeah.

That's my recipes.

LAURITA: I love it.

ELIZABETH: Hungarian food, it's a little more spicier than... We use lots of herbs.

LAURITA: Okay.

It's a lot of love... LAUREN: Mm-hmm.

LAURITA: That you put in that.

ELIZABETH: Yes, yes.

LAURITA: I can tell, I can tell.

I feel like I'm eating in your home, so that... ELIZABETH: That... LAURITA: You know, that, that's the best compliment I can give when I'm in a restaurant is that I feel like I'm at someone's home.

LAUREN: Mm-hmm.

ELIZABETH: That's what this is all about.

♪ ♪ (laughs) Okay, so I'm on my way to the iconic view of Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater.

And I'm gonna try not to total fangirl freak out.

Gimme a moment.

(rushing water) When I tell you it's even more impressive in person, trust me.

It is.

It's really the sound of the waterfall.

LAUREN: I know.

It's so peaceful.

LAURITA: Mm-hmm.

LAUREN: And the house is beautiful.

LAURITA: It is.

MAX: Hi.

MAX: How are you guys?

MAX: Welcome.

MAX: Look what you found down here in the woods.

LAURITA: This is the shot that you see in the books.

MAX: And is this your first time seeing Fallingwater in person?

LAUREN: It is.

The pictures really don't do it justice.

LAURITA: Yeah.

LAUREN: Because this is breathtaking.

MAX: What are some things that are catching your eye and your interest while we're looking?

LAUREN: So all of the stairs look really cool to me.

MAX: The Kaufmann Family who lived here loved that waterfall.

LAURITA: Yes.

MAX: It was the center of their weekend life.

Let's get a closer look and keep exploring.

LAURITA: Okay.

MAX: All right.

JUSTIN: We're here in the heart of the Laurel Highlands at Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater, which was a house designed in 1935 for the Kaufmann Family, owners of the... Pittsburgh's largest department store.

When Wright came out to this landscape to take a look at the site with the Kaufmanns, he thought he could do something pretty spectacular here.

So instead of facing the house looking at the waterfalls, he cantilevers the house up and over the waterfalls, places it on top of the waterfall so that it flows underneath the house.

Totally revolutionary concept.

Simple way to think of it is like when you pull a drawer out of a dresser drawer and the drawer stands open by itself and doesn't tip out of the dresser.

That's a cantilever.

As soon as the house was finished, because it was such an innovative design, it propelled him to fame.

It was instantly famous not just by the architect community, but by the general public.

So Fallingwater attracts people from all over the world.

It's a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

We typically see around 150 to 170,000 visitors each year.

And for architects, it's just such a revolutionary house.

The whole point of Fallingwater is to connect people to the natural world to help them better appreciate and understand and how you can live harmoniously with nature through good design.

MAX: Come on into the living room and we'll take it in.

LAUREN: Wow.

LAURITA: Hoo, hoo.

I don't know what I was expecting, but this is modern heaven.

LAUREN: I love all of the stone in here, and it feels so, like, cozy and homey.

Oh my goodness, this is beautiful.

LAURITA: Look at the low seats.

LAUREN: Yeah.

MAX: Very low.

LAURITA: In fact, everything is very low.

LAUREN: Mm-hmm.

MAX: Yeah.

If you were to kneel down just a little bit, the sight lines are adjusted just enough so that it's really more for sitting.

LAUREN: Yeah.

LAURITA: I see what you mean.

MAX: Very low ceilings.

LAURITA: I see what you mean, especially with the view.

LAUREN: Yeah.

MAX: You said cozy and homey.

When Frank Lloyd Wright designed a house, he felt that it should provide a place for shelter and rest.

He also said shelter in the open, so how do we combine shelter... LAUREN: Right.

MAX: Yet also make it open?

LAURITA: Yes.

MAX: Over here, I think this is like a boulder breaking the surface of the water.

LAURITA: Oh.

LAUREN: Ah.

MAX: Um, if you two wanted to stand on that boulder now.

LAURITA: Okay.

MAX: You could've stood there long before Fallingwater was ever imagined.

This boulder has always been here.

LAURITA: Oh.

LAUREN: Oh, he built... LAURITA: He didn't... LAUREN: Around the boulder.

Oh-ho!

MAX: Just accepted it, the challenge.

LAUREN: Wow.

MAX: And that was another part of organic architecture, right, was to include nature... LAURITA: Yes.

MAX: In the design.

LAURITA: This is the kitchen.

Pretty amazing.

And look at the refrigerator and the simple line of the door.

MAX: Really, really is... LAURITA: Check out the stove.

MAX: And Frank... Let's find the top of those steps... LAURITA: Okay.

MAX: We were looking at.

Wright called this the hatch.

Just like a ship's hatch.

LAUREN: Mm-hmm.

LAURITA: Oh, yeah.

MAX: And he designed this glass and steel enclosure to transform.

So in the wintertime, the Kaufmanns would have it shut like this.

LAURITA: Mm-hmm.

MAX: In the summer, pushes all the way back.

This goes all the way under the petunias there.

LAURITA: I can just imagine... MAX: After you.

LAURITA: Just the peace and serenity of those last two steps.

MAX: Mm-hmm.

LAURITA: Sitting there, dangling your feet... LAUREN: Mm-hmm.

LAURITA: And touchin' the water.

MAX: The Kaufmann Family definitely would use this... LAURITA: Mm-hmm.

MAX: And the plunge pool we saw.

LAURITA: Yes.

MAX: But if you remember, their favorite place to swim was right at the bottom of the waterfall.

LAURITA: Yes.

LAUREN: Right.

MAX: Which again, is not so visible.

LAUREN: Right.

MAX: It makes us maybe want to find it.

LAURITA: Yes.

MAX: So go head out to the terrace here and I'll be right behind.

LAURITA: Okay.

LAUREN: Oh, wow.

MAX: Ah-ha.

What are we gonna do next?

LAUREN: I think it's time to go get some food and just relax little bit 'cause we've done a lot today.

LAURITA: Well, you know, one thing I learned about being in Laurel Highlands is that nothing is really close.

LAUREN: Yeah, I know.

It takes a minute to get around these highlands.

(laughter).

JOHN: Hey, hey.

How are you folks?

LAURITA: Hi.

JOHN: See you got some drinks there.

Those look good.

That's our harissa-spiced red pepper, our traditional lemon and garlic and then our southwest black bean, some homemade tzatziki and then, of course, our house-smoked salmon over hickory.

LAUREN: Wow.

LAURITA: Yeah, we heard how special the smoke salmon is here, and, uh, we can't wait to try it.

JOHN: It's to die for.

JEFF: The reason why we started the place is because I used to go to all the farmers' markets around here and sell smoked salmon.

I went into the city of Pittsburgh quite a bit, too, to sell it, and it became so popular.

And this place was available, and my wife said, "What are you gonna do with all that space?"

And I said, "Well, we'll open a little sandwich shop."

And it's gone from there.

So it'll be 15 years since we opened the place.

We've called it Out of the Fire because smoked salmon is always done smoking off the fire on the side.

So it's not direct fire.

LAUREN: Well, this smoked salmon, everybody was on the money with this.

This is really good.

LAURITA: I'm glad that we decided to come here.

LAUREN: Me too.

Mmm.

That one's good too.

LAURITA: Mmm.

JEFF: The menu's evolved from being just a sandwich shop to a fine dining restaurant that's casual.

John's constantly adding new things to it.

I love the pork belly deviled eggs that we do.

It's very, very popular.

My favorite thing is the smoked salmon.

Last week, we smoked 250 pounds of smoked salmon here.

We've had a core amount of people that have always worked with us that's made us successful.

JOHN: How was everything?

Yeah?

LAURITA: Fantastic.

LAUREN: Yeah.

LAURITA: Yes.

LAUREN: We ended up switching plates because we both wanted to try each other's.

They were both so good.

LAURITA: They were.

This is a, such a beautiful part of Pennsylvania, so... LAUREN: Yeah.

LAURITA: I can't wait to come back.

LAURITA: Well, there are a lot of buildings on this property.

And that first big building... LAUREN: Mm-hmm.

LAURITA: That you see right over there?

That's the Chateau, and that's where we stayed... LAUREN: Yeah, I remember.

LAURITA: About 15 years ago.

Well, we're not staying there.

We're actually staying at one of the buildings called Falling Rock.

And you think the Chateau was lovely?

Prepare to be amazed.

TREY: The easiest way to explain Nemacolin both past, present and future is that the resort is a collection of collections.

And that really goes back to 1987 when the Hardy's first bought the property, a tiny little hunting lodge about 35 rooms, give or take.

And now if you look at the property, we now spread over 2,300 acres throughout the Laurel Highlands.

And Mr. Hardy had this vision of opening up a luxury resort to the everyman.

I think the exciting thing about Nemacolin is that we're constantly changing.

And we get our best input through the guests that come to the resort.

LAURITA: And now, we're turning into Falling Rock.

KORY: Falling Rock, it's a 42-room boutique hotel in southwestern Pennsylvania.

This hotel was designed by David Merritt.

David Merritt had studied at Taliesin.

He grew up a huge fan of Frank Lloyd Wright, and I think that the architect did a great job in creating an environment which it feels authentic and real.

It uses the principles within organic architecture.

It's about blending nature so you're inside or you're outside.

When you walk through the entryway, you have the waterfalls on the left and right.

So from that point, it really evolved into an homage to Frank Lloyd Wright in many respects in that we're able to capture the beauty of the Laurel Highlands.

This is not only a hotel.

It's actually a piece of art.

David Merritt wanted Falling Rock to be a place that you felt like you were coming home.

It's as though you were in someone's living room.

It's a very intimate experience.

It gives you that feeling of just release.

The building does a lot of the magic 'cause it really allows us just to focus on the service and the experience of the guest.

Life is about experiences.

And here at Nemacolin, you can experience so many different things.

You may come out for a few days.

You may come out for a week.

You're still not gonna be able to get everything in.
