RICARDO: Hey, DMV, I'm Ricardo, I'm a native Washingtonian.
JEN: And I'm Jen, I've lived in all four quadrants of the District.
RICARDO: We're best friends who wanna show you around.
JEN: Today, we're gonna tour three open houses.
RICARDO: We're gonna try to guess each list price without going over.
JEN: And together, we'll find out what it would be like...
BOTH: If you lived here!
(doorbell) RICARDO: So, how do we get off of this thing?
Oh, look, hey, Rashida.
RASHIDA: Hey Jen and Ricardo, so nice to see you guys again, welcome to Gaithersburg.
JEN: It's been a while since I've been out to Gaithersburg, I've come out to see some shows, go to some bars, see some friends, but I absolutely have not been here.
RASHIDA: Well, this is Rio, the iconic Gaithersburg meetup.
We've got tons of concerts, we've got tons of restaurants, and it is exactly G-burg at its finest.
RICARDO: So, Rashida, you've been in Gaithersburg for quite some time now, no?
RASHIDA: Well, I've been in Gaithersburg a little over 12 years and one reason I came to Gaithersburg is that you can get a lot of bang for your buck out here.
And one of the reasons I stay is because just how beautiful it is, they have so many beautiful parks and walking trails if you are looking to get in and out of Gaithersburg super easily, this is a great central point because just seven minutes away is Shady Grove Metro Station, which takes you right into the city.
In addition, you have the MARC train as well.
JEN: Sounds easy-peasy in and out.
RASHIDA: Yeah.
RICARDO: Yeah, I love that convenience.
RASHIDA: Yeah.
RICARDO: So, tell us a little bit more about the inventory, what kind of properties are here in Gaithersburg?
RASHIDA: People are very partial to single-family homes and townhomes.
Even our condos are a lot more garden style, which is what our first property is gonna be, so let me take you out to see that right now.
JEN: All right.
RICARDO: All right.
(doorbell) RICARDO: This is beautiful.
RASHIDA: Welcome to The Overlook inside of Montgomery Village.
Montgomery Village itself is a great community.
It's a community that was developed by the Kettler Brothers, their idea was a beautiful neighborhood community which encompassed lots of lakes and parks and things to walk to.
And I think that's exactly what they achieved.
JEN: It's not looking so much like condos, it looks like little houses.
RASHIDA: Yeah, definitely.
Well, it speaks to the feel of a community and a neighborhood less than high rises.
RICARDO: It also felt like we were driving into a shopping center, so it's residences within a shopping center?
RASHIDA: Absolutely.
There's even a path right here that takes you down into the shopping center, there's restaurants, foods from all around the world, there are grocery stores, everything you could think of.
RICARDO: Well, I am super excited to take a look inside.
Uh, once we do the tour, we'll see you afterwards for the game.
RASHIDA: Looking forward to it.
JEN: All right.
RICARDO: Thanks, Rashida.
JEN: I'm excited.
RICARDO: Okay.
JEN: Oh, hello.
Really nice and bright and certainly move-in ready.
RICARDO: Yeah, vinyl plank floors, easy to clean, durable.
JEN: Yeah, kids, pets, cooking.
And then I really like this living room.
The centerpiece though, this constellation starburst lighting fixture.
RICARDO: Yeah, fresh and modern also.
We also have a dining area here which is great, but I'm drawn to this kitchen area.
JEN: I really like these silver handles, this is an interesting shape, like, very modern.
RICARDO: Yeah.
JEN: And look, I can actually reach the tallest cabinet.
RICARDO: And I love these granite counters with a little sparkle in them.
JEN: Yeah, I like the geode feel to it.
RICARDO: Yeah, but it keeps it bright, especially with this light-colored subway tile.
JEN: I'm a little nervous about this all-white kitchen with any kind of splatter... RICARDO: Yeah.
JEN: But white was a good choice to make the room feel a little bigger and I think that they were thoughtful in all of the materials that they chose, all feel really easy to clean.
RICARDO: Let's keep looking.
JEN: Okay.
What's in here?
Whoa, this bathroom is massive.
RICARDO: This is a surprise.
JEN: Yeah, I like that the countertops from the kitchen conveyed, very consistent.
RICARDO: Mm-hmm, these light fixtures are great.
JEN: Yeah, that is really cool and I like the mirror.
I like the subway tile in the shower as well.
RICARDO: And the big tile on the floor actually makes the space feel bigger than it is.
JEN: Let's see if we can find any more surprises.
RICARDO: Good idea.
JEN: This is a really nice size.
RICARDO: Yeah.
I love this huge window that's kind of recessed, it feels like it gives you a little bit more space over here as well and look at... Two closets!
JEN: I gotta check this out.
RICARDO: Yeah, plenty of space, huh?
JEN: Let's see.
RICARDO: Look at this.
JEN: Whoa.
RICARDO: This is really nice.
JEN: Peek-a-boo.
RICARDO: Oh.
(laughter).
JEN: This is great.
RICARDO: That's even better, it's a pass-through, it gives you more storage.
JEN: Yeah.
Well, I think we have some things to think about.
RICARDO: It's time to go find Rashida and come up with some numbers.
JEN: All right, let's go.
RICARDO: All right.
JEN: Hey, Rashida.
RASHIDA: Welcome back, guys, how was your tour?
RICARDO: So many wonderful things about this property that people would love.
One of the first things I noticed was the floor.
I love this light vinyl, it opens up the space, but it has some fun texture and it's durable and easy to clean.
RASHIDA: The luxury vinyl plank is, like, all the rage, like, it's very pet-friendly, very often water resistant.
JEN: Yeah, I was a little hesitant about an all-white kitchen... RASHIDA: Yeah.
JEN: But looking at the materials that the builders chose, these all also look very easy to clean, which was a plus for me.
RASHIDA: And this light color lends to brightening and keeping the space looking as large as possible.
RICARDO: And I have to say, speaking about the larger space, that bathroom was enormous, that was a surprise, I was not expecting that.
And you have a really large bedroom back there with a great big window, letting in so much light.
JEN: And a pass-through, four-door closet.
RASHIDA: Isn't that awesome?
RICARDO: So, can you tell us what exactly is the condo fee here?
RASHIDA: It is 166.24 a month, right?
And that covers parking.
So, property number one is a one-bedroom, one-bathroom, 569-square-foot unit built in 2023.
RICARDO: Okay.
I will go first.
JEN: Oh, thank goodness.
(laughter).
RICARDO: I'm gonna say 303,000.
JEN: I'm gonna guess 299,500.
RASHIDA: Hmm.
RICARDO: Ooh, that is close.
RASHIDA: Okay, so this unit is actually 274,900.
RICARDO: Oh, no, we went over.
JEN: I cannot believe we both went over, what a deal.
RICARDO: That is a great deal though.
RASHIDA: You get that right here in G-burg.
RICARDO: Well, I am excited to see what else G-burg has to offer, I cannot wait to see house number two.
RASHIDA: House number two's gonna be fun, it is your quintessential single-family home in a great community.
JEN: Well, let's not wait any longer, let's go to house number two.
RASHIDA: Let's do it.
JEN: All right.
RICARDO: All right.
KAREN: Gaithersburg has many names over the years, uh, Log Town, Gaithersburg, and also Forest Oak.
The symbol of Gaithersburg is the Forest Oak tree, this oak tree did see the entire history, from Indigenous People up to modern times.
Towards the end of the 18th century, Benjamin Gaither set up a tavern, a general store, right by the intersection where 355 and Muddy Branch are.
As soon as the Civil War ended, they started work on the railroad.
They needed a way for farmers to get their produce from one place to another.
The railroad chose to call this stop Gaithersburg because they already had some Forest Oak stops and they didn't wanna confuse things, so Gaithersburg stuck.
As soon as the train came through, this became an industrial center.
The bank opened in 1891 and so did Montgomery County's first telephone company, it opened here in the train station.
In the 1890s, there were about 10 trains running, and then, of course, you start to have commuters.
So, we have communities getting built that didn't exist before.
Today, we have a very active train station, we probably have 20 trains a day.
You have the MARC trains in the morning and the evening, you have freight all day long, and there is an Amtrak.
We have a lot of people who just come and watch the trains.
This is the Gaithersburg Community Museum, it's an incredible resource that Gaithersburg offers to residents.
It's a very family-friendly museum, we have a lot of hands-on stations but we also have a lot of exhibits about Gaithersburg history.
(model train whistle) The thing I like about Gaithersburg the most is there's so many parks and the neighborhoods are so walkable.
We have Old Town, we have the new community of Crown, and we have Kentlands.
JODI: My name is Jodi Rapaport and I am the owner of My Big Finds.
We are in the heart of the Kentlands in Gaithersburg.
I've lived in this area for 26 years.
They have a lot of small businesses with wonderful restaurants in the community.
The thing that I love about vintage pieces is the story they have.
I always wanna remember who owned it and then how can I then give it a new life to somebody else.
I think it's really cool when residents pass it on, so it's still kind of in the community but in a newer spot.
The atmosphere of the store I would say is cozy clutter.
You have to spend the time and sometimes walk different directions, and it goes from floor to ceiling, so we have 18 feet tall of goodies in the store.
Yeah, we're open every day.
We get to meet people over and over again, so we become part of their community and that's something we strive to do.
(doorbell) JEN: Oh, this is gonna be fun.
RICARDO: Yeah.
RASHIDA: Welcome to house number two in the Saybrooke Community.
JEN: Oh, driving in, it's just such an idyllic-looking neighborhood, it really feels straight out of a storybook.
RICARDO: Yeah, I love that each home has its own unique feel.
You see a different roof line on every single property.
RASHIDA: That's a great observation because that's exactly what the community is meant to portray.
This is a single-family home community of almost 500 homes, built in the '80s.
As you can see, each home is designed to look very different from the others, outside and inside.
There's also a lot of great amenities.
You have Flower Hill Shopping Center and you have the Montgomery County Airpark, so if you have your own plane, you have a place to land.
RICARDO: Uh.
JEN: Great.
RICARDO: I was looking for a place to land my plane.
JEN: Good.
RASHIDA: Absolutely.
JEN: Well, we'll swing by there on the way home in your plane.
RASHIDA: Yeah.
RICARDO: Excellent.
RASHIDA: All right, enjoy yourself.
RICARDO: Thank you.
Oh, wow.
I like a traditional floor plan, I love a foyer with a high ceiling too.
JEN: Yeah, and I like the grandness of this foyer.
RICARDO: Mm-hmm.
JEN: There's so many different places to go, so why don't we just head this way?
RICARDO: Okay, let's go.
JEN: Okay.
Oh, this is an interesting space.
RICARDO: Yeah, this is a great-sized room.
JEN: Right now it's set up as dual offices, there's a lot of options on how to use it.
RICARDO: Yeah, this could be a perfect living room.
JEN: Library.
RICARDO: Library, yeah.
I love the crown molding also.
JEN: All right, we got a ways to go.
RICARDO: Let's go.
Okay.
JEN: Nice.
RICARDO: Nice formal dining room.
I like the two-tone effect.
JEN: I really like these little shelves too, you can really show off your china or your Lego.
Whatever your preference is really.
RICARDO: Definitely your Lego.
JEN: And I really like how the air vents match the floor.
I just think that that is such a neat little touch.
RICARDO: Yeah.
JEN: Let's go.
RICARDO: All right, I'm right behind you.
JEN: Okay.
Oh.
RICARDO: Oh.
Immediately, I am in love with these cherry cabinets.
It's also complementing these countertops as well.
JEN: Yeah, I'm really liking this kind of desert dusk feel, and I just noticed that there's, like, room for your cookbooks over here.
RICARDO: That's super thoughtful.
JEN: Yeah.
RICARDO: I'm in love with this pot rack.
This I did not have growing up.
JEN: It's also a great space saver, but my eyes are being drawn to this beautiful picture window, so why don't we head this way?
RICARDO: Absolutely.
JEN: Okay.
Oh, wow, look at this built-in, right off the bat, and all of the light from the picture window and the doors and the vaulted ceiling, this room is just feeling very joyful.
RICARDO: Mm-hmm.
Also, you can see this backyard from here, which looks pristine.
JEN: Yes, you could put a pergola out there.
RICARDO: It's the perfect place to bring people over and have a good time.
JEN: Yeah.
RICARDO: All right.
JEN: All right, let's head on up.
RICARDO: Let's go.
Oh, wow, look at this, Jen.
You've got a chair here, it's set up with a big bookshelf, what a great little reading area.
JEN: Aw, I really like the way this is set up as a mini library, really thoughtful idea.
RICARDO: Mm, do you wanna go left?
JEN: Let's do it.
RICARDO: All right.
JEN: All right, nice size bedroom.
RICARDO: Yeah, nice and comfy with the carpeting.
Looks like it's got those corner shelving features from the dining room area.
JEN: I think that's such a great use of a corner.
RICARDO: Mm-hmm.
JEN: This is a really neat little space.
RICARDO: Yeah.
JEN: Oh, I love this recess where the dormer window is.
RICARDO: Uh-huh.
JEN: I would love to just put a little chair in there, hideout.
RICARDO: You could make this into an office, this could also be an entertainment room too.
JEN: Yeah.
RICARDO: All right, there's more.
JEN: Okay.
RICARDO: This looks like a... Oh.
JEN: Ohh, skylight in your bathroom.
RICARDO: Bright and warm and it really makes every feature in this bathroom stand out.
I love the tile work in the shower.
JEN: I like the two different types of tile married together... RICARDO: Mm-hmm.
JEN: And the tile on the floor, while a little dark, it really works.
RICARDO: Yeah, it really does.
There's a little bit more house that we gotta look at.
JEN: Okay.
RICARDO: Come on.
Whoa.
This is impressive.
I am marveling at the way this room is set up.
JEN: The centerpiece here, the fan really kind of elevates the room.
RICARDO: Mm-hmm, and they have this bed set up here with the window, it's almost like a headboard of light.
JEN: It just fits perfectly.
RICARDO: Mm-hmm.
We need to go have a look at this.
JEN: Please, yes.
RICARDO: Wow.
JEN: Whoa, look at this massive tub.
RICARDO: It's insane how big that is and I love this dark stonework and these basins are really unique, I've never seen this before.
A lot to think about.
JEN: Yeah.
This one's gonna be really hard.
RICARDO: I cannot believe this is house number two.
JEN: Well, I think let's go find Rashida and get some redemption from game number one.
RICARDO: All right, let's do it.
JEN: Okay.
RICARDO: Hey, Rashida.
RASHIDA: Welcome back, guys, how was it?
RICARDO: I cannot believe this was just house number two.
JEN: Yeah.
RICARDO: And there is so much to talk about.
JEN: All of the colors in the kitchen really complemented each other to make a very warm and inviting space that I would absolutely love to work in.
RICARDO: And I think there are a lot of little tiny features in the house too, like the skylight in the bathroom upstairs that really make this house special.
RASHIDA: Yeah.
JEN: Yeah.
The built-ins, the corner shelves, just little touches that kind of make it unique, especially in the primary.
RICARDO: Oh, yeah, that headboard of light.
JEN: Oh.
RICARDO: What a great design feature, I mean, I know you could probably put the bed anywhere in that room, but setting it right there really highlighted the space.
RASHIDA: So, house number two comes in at four bedrooms, three-and-a-half bath, 3,262 square feet, including the basement, and it was built in 1989.
JEN: I'm gonna go 695,000.
RASHIDA: Hmm.
RICARDO: Oh, this time I'm gonna go a little less, I'm gonna say $678,910.
JEN: Six, seven, eight, nine, ten?
RICARDO: Yes, that's what I said.
RASHIDA: Wow, I love that.
The actual listing price is $685,000.
RICARDO: Whoa.
RASHIDA: So, Ricardo, you got this one.
RICARDO: Look at that, playing with the numbers really worked out for me that time.
RASHIDA: You're starting to know G-burg a little better.
RICARDO: I'm picking up what G-burg's putting down, yeah.
RASHIDA: So, Ricardo, you won this one, but, Jen, you have another opportunity with our next property.
Off to Rio we go.
JEN: Okay.
RICARDO: Oh, all right.
KAREN: One of the, uh, unique things about Gaithersburg is that it's home to one of the original international latitude observatories.
Observatory Park, which is just a few blocks from here, is this tiny little building, and they operated from 1899 to 1982, measuring the wobble of the Earth on its polar axis.
They were measuring distances between Earth and these different stars and the work they did there helped build GPS.
You might not have GPS on your phones if it weren't for that work.
SARAH: There is still a scientific presence in Gaithersburg.
NIST is the National Institute of Standards and Technology, it is an agency within the Department of Commerce, and it actually started back with the US Constitution, Congress decided weights and measures needed to be standardized.
From port to port, a pound was a completely different pound in Boston from it was in Baltimore, and standards were very important for fair trade, not just statewide but also internationally.
KEITH: NIST moved to Gaithersburg in 1966 and that was because there was land available here to build this large scientific campus.
Most of Gaithersburg was dairy farms at that time.
Today, the NIST campus is 500 acres, about 7,000 staff work here, and we do a variety of things from physics to engineering, material science, computer science.
One really interesting project is our net-zero energy house.
So, this is a facility that NIST uses to do research on devices that can enable a home to generate as much electricity as it uses in a year.
BRIAN: It was during 2011 to 2012 that the construction actually occurred.
It would fit in well in any Gaithersburg neighborhood in that it has all the features that you'd normally have, but yet it has extra systems with regards to heat pumps, air conditioners, water heating systems.
We also have extensive instrumentation, so we can set up laboratory tests inside a house and run them over time, and be able to monitor them remotely.
So, behind me on the floor are heating elements, and each of those heating elements represents a different person.
They would cycle on and off because as people, we generate about 60 to 70 watts.
We're little light bulbs.
And then we have humidifiers that turn on and off, again to represent moisture generation.
And then we interject these gases, in this case, CO2, to emulate what would be associated with the people inside the house breathing.
Then in the morning, they're getting up and they're showering, they're turning on lights, they're cooking.
It's a dry period during the daytime, nothing much is happening, so in those periods, we're actually exporting energy to the grid.
We wanna help the homeowner with reducing their utility bills so the house is more cost-effective over time, so just subtle changes to your house can really help you conserve energy.
(doorbell) JEN: Look at this entryway, right off the bat.
RICARDO: Yeah, this is great.
RASHIDA: Yeah, this is definitely a great first impression when you're showing off your luxury home, isn't it?
JEN: Yeah, really nice.
RICARDO: Yeah.
RASHIDA: Welcome to house number three in one of Gaithersburg's newer communities, between Rio and Downtown Crown.
You have amazing restaurants, you have your shopping, everything you could need is just over there, while you still have this park-like setting right here.
JEN: You can absolutely feel the newness in the air.
RICARDO: And I love new construction.
It's an end unit too, so you get a lot more light coming in.
RASHIDA: The end unit often has more opportunity to be larger and to have more window space.
JEN: This entryway really is feeling very elevated, and I'm really excited to see what else is in store.
RASHIDA: I'm excited for you to see what else in store.
There's the elevator, which you can take, but I'd love you to take the stairs up so you can see how it gradually just gets better and better.
Please, enjoy your tour.
JEN: All right.
RICARDO: All right, thanks, Rashida.
RASHIDA: Thank you.
JEN: Oh, this banister is nice.
RICARDO: Yeah.
Wow.
JEN: Wow.
The high ceilings in here, it just feels so lux.
RICARDO: Mm-hmm.
Yeah, I love this wainscoting above the windows, it's a great mix of old and new.
JEN: Yeah, and I really love this accent wall with this paneling, it really ties this room together.
RICARDO: Right and the quartz back panel here with the television and the fireplace is a delightful touch.
JEN: And so much light coming in from this beautiful balcony, which is a really big size.
But I can't help myself, I really need to get into this kitchen.
RICARDO: Let's get you into that kitchen.
JEN: Thank you.
JEN: Hello.
This island is incredible.
RICARDO: This is not an island, this is a continent.
(laughter).
JEN: Well, this continent has plenty of storage, it has our dishwasher and extra seating over here for your less formal meals, which is just perfect.
RICARDO: Yeah, I love the light fixtures too.
JEN: The gold leaf on the inside is really bringing some warmth to this hard quartz.
RICARDO: Yeah, and it's cohesive with the counter and the back wall, it's actually just one slab, which makes it so much easier to clean.
JEN: Absolutely.
It really makes this whole kitchen feel very modern and I'm really liking the color of these cabinets, they're not just a stark white... RICARDO: Mm-hmm.
JEN: They're accenting the gray in the marble vein.
And then, when we're done cooking in this amazing kitchen, we head right on over to our formal dining room.
This really is beautiful.
RICARDO: I love this light fixture, it's evocative of the light fixture that we saw in house number one but it elevates it to a whole new level.
JEN: Yeah, and I think all the color choices in this house are really smart.
RICARDO: Mm-hmm.
JEN: They differentiate each room, even though we have an open concept.
RICARDO: Right, and it highlights the color and the warmth in the floor.
JEN: Yeah.
RICARDO: And there's more to see upstairs.
JEN: All right.
RICARDO: Oh.
JEN: Oh, nice landing.
RICARDO: Yeah.
JEN: Great.
Let's see what's in here.
I really like how they have this designed as a little kid's room.
RICARDO: Mm-hmm.
I love this color.
JEN: Really pretty.
RICARDO: Yeah.
JEN: All right, what's behind the double doors?
RICARDO: We'll have to find out.
JEN: Okay.
Oh, wow.
RICARDO: Ooh.
JEN: This is great.
RICARDO: Yeah I love the amount of light that's coming into this room.
JEN: You're really feeling the benefits of the end unit in here.
RICARDO: Mm-hmm.
JEN: And enough room for a...
BOTH: Cali King.
JEN: Our favorite.
This is a great primary.
Something is catching my eye over here.
RICARDO: Oh, wow.
JEN: Oh, my gosh.
What closet have you ever seen that had its own crown molding?
There's also room for a full makeup station back here, so you don't have to be in the bathroom taking up space.
RICARDO: Mm-hmm.
I could spend a lot of time in here and I'm sure you could too but we've got more house to see.
JEN: Okay.
RICARDO: Come on.
No, you're kidding.
Look at that.
JEN: This is almost a triple vanity.
RICARDO: It's huge.
JEN: Ugh, and these mirrors are massive.
RICARDO: Mm-hmm.
This shower though, I love the black tile and the stone floor is luxurious.
JEN: Yeah, I would really like to feel the water under my feet on those stones.
RICARDO: Mm-hmm.
JEN: Well, I can't believe I'm saying this but I think there's another level, so it's my turn to drag you away.
RICARDO: Oh, all right.
(laughter).
JEN: Okay, so we have another bedroom up here on the top level.
RICARDO: Yeah.
Great guest space.
They've got it set up with two really big beds up here.
JEN: This might be perfect for a family with children.
RICARDO: Mm-hmm.
JEN: Everybody has space up here.
RICARDO: It looks like they've got a bathroom here too.
JEN: Great.
This is a really big bathroom for not being the primary.
RICARDO: Yeah, I love the amount of counter space you have here, I see that it's consistent with this dark hardware.
JEN: Yeah, I think it's a smart choice.
And this shower is so big, I love the door and the bench in there is really nice.
RICARDO: And because there's no window in here, the light tile work helps keep it bright.
JEN: Yeah.
Well, we made it to the top.
RICARDO: Yeah.
But in order to play the game, we've gotta find our way down and look for Rashida.
JEN: All right, well, I know of a good way we can get there.
RICARDO: Uh, I was hoping it'd involve the elevator.
JEN: And you're going down.
RICARDO: Uh-oh, I think that's a challenge.
Hey, Rashida.
RASHIDA: Hi, Jen and Ricardo, welcome back.
RICARDO: Love the elevator.
(laughter).
RASHIDA: I know, that must've been so exciting.
Tell me more about the rest of your tour.
RICARDO: Well, I absolutely love the amount of space that this property has to offer.
JEN: I mean, not only was it tall, with four levels, but it was wide.
RICARDO: And we can't forget the light fixtures too, in every room in the house, from the living room to the kitchen with the gold leaf, what a great touch.
JEN: And then we saw the closet in that primary, I thought we were gonna buy on the spot, to be perfectly honest.
He had to drag me out of there.
(laughter).
RICARDO: Yeah, it was enormous.
JEN: And each room had its own distinct color, really making this open concept feel very individual.
RASHIDA: So, this townhouse comes in with three bedrooms, three full baths, two half baths, the square footage is 2,544, and it was built in 2021.
RICARDO: I will say 1,500,000.
RASHIDA: Mm, okay.
JEN: Well, then I'm gonna go a little more conservative and I'm gonna guess 1.1 million.
RICARDO: Oh, all right.
JEN: Mm.
RASHIDA: This house comes in at $1,190,000.
RICARDO: Oh.
JEN: Woo, thank goodness.
RICARDO: That's a lie, I don't believe you, but congratulations.
JEN: Yeah.
RASHIDA: G-burg special.
