♪ ♪ He stood straight and tall in his uniform and all ♪ ♪ His mama's face broke out into a grin ♪ ♪ "Oh son, you look so fine, I'm glad you're a son of mine, ♪ ♪ You make me proud to know you hold a gun ♪ ♪ Do what the captain says, lots of medals you will get, ♪ ♪ And we'll put them on the wall when you come home" ♪ ♪ As that old train pulled out, John's ma began to shout, ♪ ♪ Tellin' everyone in the neighborhood: ♪ ♪ "That's my son that's about to go, ♪ ♪ He's a soldier now, you know" ♪ ♪ She made well sure her neighbors understood ♪ ♪ She got a letter once in a while ♪ ♪ And her face broke into a smile ♪ ♪ As she showed them to the people from next door ♪ ♪ And she bragged about her son with his uniform and gun, ♪ ♪ And these things you called a good old-fashioned war ♪ ♪ Then the letters ceased to come, ♪ ♪ For a long time they did not come ♪ ♪ They ceased to come for about ten months or more ♪ ♪ Then a letter finally came saying, ♪ ♪ "Go down and meet the train ♪ ♪ Your son's a-coming back from the war" ♪ ♪ She smiled and went right down, ♪ ♪ She looked up and all around ♪ ♪ But she could not see her soldier son in sight ♪ ♪ But as all the people passed, she saw her son at last, ♪ ♪ When she did she could not believe her eyes ♪ ♪ Oh his face was all shot up ♪ ♪ And his hands were blown away ♪ ♪ And he wore a metal brace around his waist ♪ ♪ He whispered kind of slow, in a voice she did not know, ♪ ♪ While she couldn't even recognize his face!
♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ "Oh tell me, my darling son, tell me what they done ♪ ♪ How is it you come to be this way?"
♪ ♪ He tried his best to talk but his mouth could hardly move ♪ ♪ And his mother had to turn her face away ♪ ♪ "Don't you remember, Ma, when I went off to war ♪ ♪ You thought it was the best thing I could do?
♪ ♪ I was on the battleground, you were home acting proud ♪ ♪ You wasn't there standing in my shoes" ♪ ♪ "Oh, and I thought when I was there, ♪ ♪ Lord, what am I doing here?
♪ ♪ I'm a-tryin' to kill somebody or die tryin' ♪ ♪ But the thing that scared me most ♪ ♪ Was when my enemy came close ♪ ♪ And I could see that his face looked just like mine" ♪ ♪ "And I couldn't help but think, ♪ ♪ Through the thunder rolling and stink, ♪ ♪ That I was just a puppet in a play ♪ ♪ And through the roar and smoke, ♪ ♪ This string is finally broke, ♪ ♪ And a cannon ball blew my eyes away" ♪ ♪ ♪ As he turned away to go, his Ma was going slow ♪ ♪ At seein' the metal brace that helped him stand ♪ ♪ But as he turned to leave, he called his mother close ♪ ♪ And he dropped his medals down into her hand ♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ [cheers and applause] ♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ They're selling postcards of the hanging ♪ ♪ They're painting the passports brown ♪ ♪ The beauty parlor is filled with sailors ♪ ♪ The circus is in town ♪ ♪ Here comes the blind commissioner ♪ ♪ They've got him in a trance ♪ ♪ One hand is tied to the tight-rope walker ♪ ♪ The other is in his pants ♪ ♪ And the riot squad they're restless ♪ ♪ They need somewhere to go ♪ ♪ As Lady and I look out tonight ♪ ♪ From Desolation Row ♪ ♪ ♪ Cinderella, she seems so easy ♪ ♪ "It takes one to know one," she smiles ♪ ♪ And puts her hands in her back pockets ♪ ♪ Bette Davis style ♪ ♪ And in comes Romeo, he's moaning ♪ ♪ "You Belong to Me I Believe" ♪ ♪ And someone turns and says, ♪ ♪ "You're in the wrong room, my friend ♪ ♪ You better hurry up and leave" ♪ ♪ And the only sound that's left ♪ ♪ After the ambulances go ♪ ♪ Is Cinderella sweeping up ♪ ♪ On Desolation Row ♪ ♪ ♪ Now the moon is almost hidden ♪ ♪ The stars are beginning to hide ♪ ♪ The fortune telling lady ♪ ♪ Has even taken all her things inside ♪ ♪ All except for Cain and Abel ♪ ♪ And the hunchback of Notre Dame ♪ ♪ Everybody is making love ♪ ♪ Or else expecting rain ♪ ♪ And the Good Samaritan, he's dressing ♪ ♪ He's getting ready for the show ♪ ♪ He's going to the carnival tonight ♪ ♪ On Desolation Row ♪ ♪ Now Ophelia, she's 'neath the window ♪ ♪ For her I feel so afraid ♪ ♪ On her twenty-second birthday ♪ ♪ She already is an old maid ♪ ♪ To her, death is quite romantic ♪ ♪ She wears an iron vest ♪ ♪ Her profession's her religion ♪ ♪ Her sin is her lifelessness ♪ ♪ And though her eyes are fixed upon ♪ ♪ Noah's great rainbow ♪ ♪ She spends her time peeking ♪ ♪ Into Desolation Row ♪ ♪ ♪ Across the street they've nailed the curtains ♪ ♪ They're getting ready for the feast ♪ ♪ The Phantom of the Opera ♪ ♪ In a perfect image of a priest ♪ ♪ They're spoon feeding Casanova ♪ ♪ To get him to feel more assured ♪ ♪ Then they'll kill him with self-confidence ♪ ♪ After poisoning him with words ♪ ♪ And the Phantom's shouting to skinny girls ♪ ♪ "Get outta here if you don't know" ♪ ♪ Casanova is just being punished for going ♪ ♪ To Desolation Row ♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ At midnight all the agents ♪ ♪ And the superhuman crew ♪ ♪ Come out and round up everyone ♪ ♪ That knows more than they do ♪ ♪ Then they bring them to the factory ♪ ♪ Where the heart-attack machine ♪ ♪ Is strapped across their shoulders ♪ ♪ And then the kerosene ♪ ♪ Is brought down from the castles ♪ ♪ By insurance men who go ♪ ♪ Check to see that nobody is escaping ♪ ♪ Desolation Row ♪ ♪ Yes, I received your letter yesterday ♪ ♪ About the time the door knob broke ♪ ♪ When you asked me how I was doing ♪ ♪ Was that some kind of joke?
