As a port city and transportation hub, Alexandria had great strategic importance at the start of the Civil War. After Virginia seceded, Union troops quickly occupied the city, which saw the War's first death by violent act when U.S. Army Col. Elmer Ellsworth was killed by a hotel owner for removing the Confederate flag flying over the hotel.
